Mobile Mechanic Service Spotlight: What Your Spark Plugs Say About Engine Health

Good vs bad spark plugs

During a recent service call in Elizabethtown, PA, I replaced a full set of spark plugs—and the comparison was too good not to share.

Take a look at the image above. On the left: brand new double iridium spark plugs. On the right: the old plugs I pulled from the engine. The difference is clear—literally. While the new plugs are clean and sharp-edged, the old ones are covered in carbon buildup, discolored, and heavily worn down at the electrodes.

Why does this matter?
Spark plugs are small but critical components. They ignite the air-fuel mixture that powers your engine. Worn or fouled spark plugs can cause:

  • Poor fuel economy
  • Engine misfires
  • Hard starts
  • Rough idling
  • Loss of power

What to Watch For: Signs You May Need New Spark Plugs

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s time for an inspection.

  • Engine shaking or vibrating
  • Difficulty starting the car
  • Check engine light with misfire codes
  • Decreased MPG
  • Hesitation during acceleration

Takeaway:
Spark plugs wear out over time— most needing replaced every 60,000 miles.
